FARRAH FAWCETT’s former hairdresser has been left stunned by the actions of an opportunist, who is attempting to sell off a lock of the late actress’ hair online.

Mela Murphy, who styled the Charlie’s Angels star’s famed blonde locks for 20 years, has called plans to sell the sick memorabilia to fans for $1,000 (£625), “scary”.

The “one-time novelty item from the 1970s” has been put up for auction on website HunkWithJunk.com, but Murphy will not be among the bidders.

She tells the Globe, “I am stunned.”

“Hair and shoes are the most important,” says the celebrity hairdresser. “The in between takes care of itself”

What do you consider attractive in a woman?

Power. A lot of Kate Moss’s attraction is her power. Good looks are very powerful if you use them in the right way.

What is your favourite item in your wardrobe?

A pair of classic Church’s shoes in brown crocodile. They’d been winking at me for a while and cost a fortune – I could probably have bought a small car for the same price. The guilt meant I couldn’t look at them for the first couple of years, but now I wear them all the time.

What is your one piece of fashion or beauty advice?

Great shoes and great hair; the in-between can take care of itself.

What has been your biggest fashion faux pas?

I’ve been through the green hair, the platform shoes, the perm, the designer coats that looked like they should have been on a tramp. Having fun is what fashion is all about.

What aspect of fashion do you dislike?

Heavy commercial pushes for the latest trends. It makes fashion a competitive race, and it doesn’t inspire individuality.

Do you think there is as much pressure on men as on women to look good?

Thanks to people like David Beckham and George Clooney, who always look so groomed, I think there is.

Do you use men’s grooming products?

My bathroom is like Selfridges’ beauty hall. I love M Lab moisturisers and Jurlique Camomile Mist. I use This Works in the bath and I love Lancôme shaving gel.

How do you think people perceive you from the way you dress?

They might think I’m slightly careless as I tend to throw things on.

What are your five desert-island style staples?

Vintage Levi’s jeans, adidas trainers, Comme des Garçons shirts, Uniqlo cashmere and Margiela trousers.

What is a day in the fashion life of Sam McKnight?

It depends. If I’m shooting in the studio, I wear Levi’s, a V-neck sweater and a T-shirt. And trainers as I’ll be jumping around all day. For a trip abroad, I’ll be a bit smarter on the plane. If I’m on the beach shooting for Vogue, I won’t scare anyone with my thong – it’s shorts and a T-shirt.
